Welcome to the 200th episode of the Executive Leap Minute. Today, I’m going to talk about Job Search Lies. Don’t let people lie to you about the Job Search. I’m here to set things straight. I have several points I want to make today, and you’ll tune in tomorrow, and I’ll wrap this thing up. The first point I want to make is that people have tried to tell me that the applicant tracking systems are bogus. It’s not bogus. Most companies, even the small ones, 50 people or less, are using some AI or artificial intelligence to help with searching for candidates. The ATS filters out candidates that fit versus those that don’t fit a specific job description. So you must make sure your resume is ATS friendly. The second point I want to make today has to do with networking. I’ve been told that people think networking is dead. And I say, What are you talking about? It’s not dead. You’re just not doing it correctly. I’m sure you know the name of the person that cuts your hair. Guy or Gou, they probably do a great job, and you have his or her number handy. You can explain why you go there and how great a job they do.
This is networking. Make sure people you’re asking to network with know exactly what you want to do and your expertise. This reminds me of a family friend who reached out recently with his resume. He said he was making a career transition, and if we know anyone, that would be great. Well, this guy used to be a commercial builder, and he didn’t provide any insight, just a resume. That is not networking. That is simply an announcement of a career change. Being specific increases your chances of having your network give you a hand in landing. Tune in tomorrow as I wrap up a few more of these job search lies. Thanks for listening to my executive search, Insider Secrets, to leaping past your competition into your next great job. I’m Mike Sudermann. Have a great day.
